When discussing or studying the First World War, it is all too easy to concentrate on the fighting and the general slaughter that too place. But there are some other aspects that well repay studying. The role that women played in the First World War was an extremely important one. When the war broke out, women were not allowed to vote in parliamentary elections in the United Kingdom, - and yet they served a vital role in keeping industry going, and in producing the arms and munitions that were required for the war. These jobs were additional to the more obvious ones such as in nursing.
